A few years ago, I volunteered at a Leap of Joy recital, and it changed the way I understood dance.
Some parents first enrolled their children because the program gave them a few hours of safe, affordable care. But when recital day arrived, dance had become something much more. I watched one family search through their pockets to gather the five-dollar admission fee. Inside the auditorium, a mother suddenly called out with pride, “That’s my girl!”
In that moment, I realized that dance does not need an elaborate theater to become meaningful. A child performing on a small stage can bring a family the same pride and joy that I have experienced performing before audiences of thousands.
I also began to understand how different our opportunities could be. I had grown up training in comfortable studios with dedicated teachers, private coaching, performances, and summer intensives. Many equally talented children had never been given access to those experiences.
That realization inspired Jeune Étoile.
My name is Allie, and with the help of my brothers, friends, dancers, teachers, and young artists, I created a student-led collection of ballet-inspired gifts. We wanted to celebrate the characters and stories of classical ballet while using something we loved to support opportunities for other children.
We donate a portion of proceeds to Leap of Joy, an Austin nonprofit that provides dance, theater, and creative movement programs to underserved children.
I know there are many inequalities in life, and we cannot solve them all. But meaningful change often begins with one small step. Jeune Étoile is ours—using the art form that has given me so much to help another child discover the confidence, belonging, and joy of dance.
When you choose Jeune Étoile, you are not simply purchasing a ballet-inspired gift. You are helping another child have a chance to step onto the stage—and giving another family a reason to proudly say, “That’s my child " .
